First Generation - The Birth of iSMART

During the early days of the pandemic, our scientists discovered that certain trained dogs could detect diseases, including COVID-19, with extraordinary accuracy using their sense of smell. This remarkable ability sparked the idea of developing organic sensors that could replicate the precision of a dog’s nose in detecting viral body odours.

The first-generation iSMART system focused on creating organic sensors capable to detect COVID-19 carriers by analysing body odours associated with the virus and the resulting changes in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These sensors achieved near-perfect accuracy in laboratory tests, marking a breakthrough in diagnostic technology.

Second Generation - Integration of Artificial Intelligence

Building on the success of the initial sensors, the second-generation iSMARTⓇ incorporated advanced artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. These algorithms enhanced the system’s ability to analyse complex patterns in VOC data, making diagnostics faster, more reliable, and scalable for widespread use. This phase also saw the integration of real-time data analysis capabilities. Governments and health organisations could use iSMARTⓇ terminals to monitor COVID-19 hotspots dynamically, enabling swift intervention and resource allocation. Italy was one of the first countries to deploy these AI-powered terminals, which proved instrumental in saving lives and mitigating the pandemic’s impact.
